How to Avoid the Unrealistic Expectations SEOs Often Create

By: Rand Fishkin

Now this isn’t exactly an article but one of Moz’s great Whiteboard Friday videos, and it’s totally worth it.  The hardest thing in SEO isn’t getting a website on page one, but managing your client’s expectations!  I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve approached a client with gigantic, superbowl touchdown in the last minute of the game WINS…..and the client simply passes over it saying, “what’s next?”  It leaves me dumbfounded at times trying to understand where my client’s expectations are so I can communicate to them in such a way that they can understand the value of the service I provide.  Plus this video is breaking down what are job is step by step in case you feel lost in the movement of the SEO world. So Rand has some excellent tips on a very important subject and you should definitely take a look!

Pros:

– The BEST explanation of “SEO is Dead” argument

– Step by Step System for doing SEO these days

Cons:

– Rand’s Hair….Seriously I couldn’t stop staring at it…

Overall: Watch It!

What Does Psychology Have to Do with Creating Engaging Headlines?

By: Kali Hawlk

Writing engaging headlines is a must for not only increased click through rates, but can lead to higher social media shares.  When it comes to understanding the psychology of our target audience, which is a MUST in SEO this article has some good advice, but there a few things that just don’t come across very well. For example the author says, “Two Ways to Better Your Financial Situation” should be changed to “Are You Missing Out on These Two Simple Ways to Guarantee Financial Success?”  First off this is WAY too long to fit in the SERP and Google would cut it off midway, and that would kill your click through rate completely!  Instead I would shorten it to, “Two Weird Tricks to Guarantee Financial Success.”  Still I’m not perfect in this field either and this article does highlight some good stuff that we could add to our toolbox.

Pros:

 Easy breakdown of Marketing Psychology

– Links to Great Sources

Cons:

– A Tad Long

– Some odd examples

Overall: Skim It

How Google’s Penguin 3.0 Is Playing Out Across The Web

By: Phillip Petrescu

When ever Google releases a major new algorithm update it takes a lot of testing among the SEO community to figure out exactly the intensity of the algorithm impact on the SERP.  Petrescu was gracious enough to share with all of us the data he and his company have collected and he shows some interesting things, the most surprising is that Penguin 3.0 might have different impacts on the SERP from country to country?  One thing that I’ve personally noticed but didn’t have any data till this seeing this article is that Penguin 3.0 hit low ranking websites on page 3 and below hardest.  This article is worth a quick skim through, but I think you’ll get the gist of it with out a detailed read through.

Pro:

– Data to explore Penguin 3.0

– Quick Read & to the Point

Cons:

– Could use links to more data

Overall: Skim It
